As a self supporting bell tower and as to go along with the cathedral of Pisa in Italy, in the year 1172, the Leaning Tower of Pisa was commissioned. But the foundation which was laid in the next year was not strong enough to hold up the designed structure. The foundation was laid in a rounded ditch was a combination of shells, clay and fine sand, 5 feet deep on ground.

The tower which was 3 storey’s high, have already started to bend by 1178. Until 1272, the construction of the tower has been stopped as the builders had more important matters on their minds, at that time.

This break for almost a century, has been helpful for the tower as this long time has allowed the tower’s foundation and the underneath soil to settle. If the construction went on continuously without any break, the tower might have been collapsed.

A new architect, with an endeavor to make straight the sloping tower, have determined that the next other storey’s would be angled. But all this have accomplished to make the tower bend in another direction.

The construction has been stopped again during 1284 because of the war and in the year 1319, the last storey has been done and in 1372, the bell chamber was added.

The Leaning tower of Pisa has bend in several directions from over the centuries. In order to maintain the slope in a correct form, the officials have examined the inclination of the tower and are making use of several methods.

The present slope of the tower of about 13 feet is accurate and the officials are expecting that for the next two centuries there will not be any problem.
